Post 12: Inside the Apple Iphone Portfolio

After introducing Apple's Iphone Apple has filed more than 250 million units and became one of the leading smartphone seller in the world. Along the way, Apple has filed more than 1300 patents just for the Iphone.

But an interesting fact is that Apple also entered into more than 479 lawsuits to protect its Intellectual Property. In most of the lawsuits Apple acts as a defendant but it also became more aggressive in pursuit of the violation of its patents by other companies.

Apple has filed some of patents that would revolutionize the way users interact with smartphones. Imagine if you could scan the airport to find an outlet to charge your phone. Iphone has already filed the patent for it. It invented and filed patents for some of the most breakthrough technologies in the world, like Iphone fuel cell technology, that will allow the portable device to keep the battery without being recharged for days, and even weeks.

Below is the graph that describes the core technologies in which Apple has filed its patents for Iphone.

It is fascinating to realize how many patents, resources and talent it takes to create one device that everyone is using every day without thinking about it.

  1. 1300!? Wow, that is a lot. No wonder they have to go through so many lawsuits with its rivals. 279 patents for just a camera amazes me too.

    1. Hi Eliza,

I agree. It is a lot. But what amazes me more is the huge competition in the smartphone industry regardless of the competitive advantage Apple won with its number of patents.

  2. Yeah the number of patents is quite amazing! I was also surprised when I heard that Motorola's acquisition by Google added 17,000 patents to Google's portfolio and another 7,500 that were patent pending.
