Apple has taken another step on its innovative path and applied for a patent on Wireless charging via Apple's Smartcover. If Apple is able to develop this feature, this will be a breakthrough technology that will allow customers interact with wireless devices on a new level without having to charge them every day.
With the technologies currently developed, this feature seems to be barely feasible. However, Apple claimed that it might offer this feature as early as this year. It is very bold of them to claim that, but the technology might be in final stage of development in R&D labs at Apple.
The way the new technology works is that Ipad Smart Case will have an inductive power transmitter. The internal battery will be disposed within the case, creating an "on-the-go" charger. Wireless charging efficiency relies on the proximity between the transmitting and receiving induction coils. Apple's current Smart Cover uses magnets to ensure accurate alignment of cover to Ipad to optimize the charging system.
Ipad would be charged automatically when the cover is closed, and the cover can be charged traditionally by plugging it into a power source via USB. Although Apple also claims on planning on incorporating the solar cells into the cover as well.
An interesting fact is that Apple files for many technologies but very few of them make it to the point on entering the market. However, there is a huge demand in the market for wireless charging system, and Apple might be able to introduce that feature in its products in the future.
Macrumors: Apple Applies for Patent on Wireless iPad Charging via Smart Cover
Wow... I can't even imagine this coming to fruition. It will not be patentable until it is proven to be feasible using existing tech systems, though, as we learned in class.
ReplyDeleteThis could revolutionize how the market views the battery life of wireless devices. It would give Apple a competitive advantage in the tablet industry given that one of the main features being marketed is the lifespan of a battery. That all being said, it's hard to see this actually coming to market this year given that the technology doesn't necessarily exist yet.
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to see Apple introduces this new technology to the new iPad. It definitively opens another window in the tablet market. I wonder what Samsung will come up next to go against with Apple.
ReplyDeleteThis technology is already available, but just not to the extent at which Apple is aspiring to do it. Sadly, this may also be a preemptive patent because that is often the case, as is assumed with the "glass" watch.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Aviv, this would definitely create a ripple in the market in terms of battery life expectations. However, just because Apple filed the patent doesn't mean it will ever become a product, so we'll have to wait and see.
